The South African Cybersecurity Awards (SACAs), hosted by CyberM8 Initiative NPC, follows a transparent and rigorous judging process to ensure credibility, fairness, and excellence in recognising cybersecurity leadership in South Africa.

1. Call for Nominations

A public call for nominations is issued across media platforms, inviting individuals, organisations, and initiatives to submit entries or be nominated by others. Each category has clearly defined eligibility criteria and submission guidelines.

2. Initial Screening

Once nominations close, the awards committee conducts an initial screening to verify eligibility, completeness, and relevance of submissions. Entries that meet the basic criteria move on to the evaluation round.

3. Independent Judging Panel

An independent panel of judges is constituted, comprising cybersecurity professionals, academics, industry leaders, civil society representatives, and public sector experts. Judges are selected based on expertise, impartiality, and diversity.

4. Evaluation Criteria

Judges assess entries based on a standardised scoring system. While criteria may differ slightly by category, the following core areas are considered:

  • Impact: Demonstrated contribution to cybersecurity advancement

  • Innovation: Originality and ingenuity of solution or intervention

  • Leadership: Influence in driving change or awareness

  • Scalability: Potential for broader application or replication

  • Sustainability: Long-term impact and value

Each judge scores independently to ensure objective and balanced evaluations.

5. Deliberation and Shortlisting

Scores are consolidated and top-performing nominees in each category are shortlisted. The judging panel may request additional information or interviews to gain more insight where necessary.

6. Final Selection

The judging panel reconvenes to deliberate and reach consensus on winners per category. In the event of a tie or close scores, judges may call for further discussion or a majority vote.

7. Announcement of Winners

Winners will be revealed at the SACAs Gala Dinner during the Cybersecurity Indaba, with each award presented by key industry and government stakeholders. Finalists will be notified in advance and invited to attend.

8. Post-Awards Feedback

Nominees may request high-level feedback on their submissions post-event to support continuous improvement and future participation.
